Six top-performing students who sat the Grade Six Achievement Test have benefited from the Gas Professionals (Gas Pro) scholarship valued at more than $300,000.

The recipients are Iabcde Baxter and Michael McNaughton, of Windward Road Primary and Junior High; Rachael Gayle and Nickon Linton of Norman Gardens Primary and Junior High; Samantha Davis and Daniel Samuels of Rennock Lodge All-Age School.

Plan to sustain

The three boys and three girls have received $50,000 to help finance their educational expenses this year.

"Each student will get $50,000 in the first year and we plan to sustain all educational materials deemed suitable for learning throughout the school years," explained Peter Graham, chief executive officer of Gas Pro.

While adamant that the recipients of the scholarship would make the most of the opportunity provided, Graham said the company would only continue to finance the education of the students if a B to B+ grade point average and good conduct are maintained.

He said the money has already been paid to some of the various secondary schools which the recipients will be attending.

Speaking at the function yesterday, held at Windward Road in Kingston Graham implored the recipients not to settle for mediocre thinking and to play to win.

Samantha, speaking to The Gleaner, said she worked very hard to win the scholarship.

Michelle Scott, Samantha's mother, said the scholarship comes at a very appropriate time.
