The People's National Party (PNP) caretaker for Western St Thomas, Gary Foster, was detained for several hours yesterday at the Central Police Station in downtown Kingston.
However, senior police officers say Foster was not implicated in any wrongdoing.
They said he was picked up as a person of interest in an investigation they were carrying out.
The investigators, however, declined to elaborate on the nature of the probe.
It is understood that the police went to the home of a relative of Foster and carried out a search of the premises.
On hearing that the police were searching his relative's home, Foster reportedly hurried to the station.
His home was subsequently searched, after which he was taken to the Central Police Station in Kingston.
Foster replaced Rosemarie Shaw as the PNP caretaker two years ago in the aftermath of the party's 2006 presidential election.
