No reparations in my name

Published: Tuesday | August 4, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

I have read the article on "Britain to track slave trade money" published on August 2. I don't mind the collaboration between Britain and the University of the West Indies in carrying out this research and publishing their findings for our history. What I do mind is the serious talk of reparation.

Payment benefit

How will this payment benefit us the true descendants of the slaves? Will the payment be stashed in some offshore accounts, or will it be put to use for all of Jamaica? Not in my name! Slavery was abolished 170 years ago. As a nation we shouldn't be looking for handouts. Instead we should rise up as a strong, ambitious people and take our country's destiny in our own hands and minds to bring it up to the standard it deserves.

I am sure the spirits of our enslaved ancestors would be proud of us.

I am, etc.,
