The Department of Correctional Services has received a major boost to its rehabilitation programme with Wednesday's opening of two facilities at the Tower Street Correctional Centre.

The facilities - a refurbished building that will be used as a pre-release hostel, and a visitors' lodge - are both located on adjoining properties.

The hostel is to be used for the reintegration of Jamaican deportees as well as outgoing inmates. It is expected to reduce the incidence of recidivism and reintegrate returnees into society.

The facilities can accommodate 40 men.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, British High Commissioner Jeremy Cresswell said, "I hope the new faci-lity will encourage family members to visit their relatives that are incarcerated, thereby strengthening family links, as the continuation of relationship of persons incarcerated on their relatives outside is an important contribution their transition back into normal life."

Acting Commissioner of Corrections June Spence-Jarrett praised the efforts of the high commission, the Department for International Development and the Ministry of National Security for their efforts in getting the facilities off the ground.
