More questions for Prime Minister

Published: Saturday | July 25, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

I was privileged to watch the 'All Angles' interview of Prime Minister Bruce Golding on TVJ with host Dionne Jackson-Miller on Wednesday, July 22. I was proud how he handled the queries on the occasion. Each time I mumbled to myself, "Well, I think we have got him trapped now," he comfortably articulated his way out of the quandary, enlightening we lesser disciples in the process.

However, there is one puzzle I would like to revisit for a short spell, and that is the imminent reshuffling of personnel in the Ministry of Finance. I am a little bit bewildered here. Now, if Don Wehby's going will not create a void in the ministry as was stated, then why was he seconded from his high-profile job for two years? If he is not going to be missed, why was he asked to stay on for another six months?

I am going to suggest that the prime minister ask Dr Omar Davies to consider taking over the position of minister without portfolio because:

He is very qualified in this his field of expertise.

He definitely has the experience.

He has been very generous with his advice over the past two years.

And since Audley Shaw is an aggressive minister, he will be able to restrain Dr Davies's well-known overenthusiasm.

This could very well be a precedent, but one with other 'spin offs. It should help to unite us in Jamaica in these troubled times, as it will demonstrate that we are not just JLP or PNP, but primarily Jamaicans. It would also demonstrate that we have finally matured, even so quickly after the sexual offences bill, which get us nowhere, as we are right back where we started 14 years ago.

For what it is worth, I am sorry to have thrown two stones among the pigeons. But I am bracing for the condemnations, but it was recommended with the best outcome in mind to help us make it through these times of tribulations.

I am, etc.,
