Mayor of St Ann's Bay, Ivan Anderson, says changes are coming to the Ocho Rios transport centre to make it more customer friendly in light of efforts by authorities to get transport operators to use the facility.

On Monday, a massive police operation in the resort town cleared the streets of taxi operators and vendors, ensuring that traffic flowed freely through a town usually congested by hordes of them.

But several users of the centre complained about shortcomings there, including inadequate covering and lighting, a situation which Anderson said would be addressed within a few weeks.

"We will be providing more cover, we are in dialogue with the ministry and work should start in two to three weeks' time. We will also be providing adequate lighting," Anderson told The Gleaner on Tuesday.

Comfortable for operators

Anderson said that the problem of alleged drug users occupying the facility would also be addressed.

Questioned about the sustain-ability of the effort, following previous shortlived attempts to have transport operators use the council's transport centres across the parish, Anderson suggested: "If we get them (transport operators) into the park, we have to make them comfortable or else they will go back on the streets."

The law-enforcement team maintained its presence on the streets of Ocho Rios up to yesterday, ensuring that traffic flowed freely for the second straight day through the town.

There was also a marked reduction in the number of public-passenger vehicles on the streets, a situation one commuter suggested came about as some taxicabs were "not straight".
