The Director of public prosecutions (DPP) has ruled that a policeman is to be charged with the murder of his girlfriend.
Okaro Bennett, a 21-year-old constable attached to the Narcotics Division, is accused of killing 29-year-old Jacqueline Johnson, a labourer from the Red Hills district, St Andrew.
Shooting
On Wednesday, June 24, about 5:40 a.m., residents of Westchester in Portmore were awakened by an explosion. When checks were made, it was revealed that Johnson was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Bennett told investigators that he was at home with Johnson when she took up his 9mm pistol and began playing with it.
The policeman said he tried to retrieved the weapon from the woman when the gun went off, hitting her.
Bennett was taken into custody while a file was sent to the DPP for a ruling to be made.
The policeman is scheduled to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court today.
