Ministry to meet angry teachers

The finance ministry says it is not likely to meet with teachers before next week over the third payment of retroactive funds which are due today.

Following a meeting of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) general council on the weekend, the teachers resolved that they would be seeking the intervention of the International Labour Organisation and Education International if the Government failed to honour the agreed deadline.

It also warned that there could be a disruption in activities leading up to the reopening of schools in September.

But state minister of finance, Arthur Williams, who has direct oversight of the public sector wage negotiations, said a meeting would be arranged to finalise a payment schedule for the outstanding sums.

The teachers are owed $7.9 billion for the period April 1, 2007-March 31, 2009.

The increase will affect some 22,000 teachers islandwide.

Up to news time yesterday, the JTA said it had had no dialogue with the Ministry of Finance about its intention to meet.
