'No need for masks'

Jamaica's Chief Medical Officer Dr Sheila Campbell-Forrester has advised that there is no need to wear masks during day-to-day activities.

Campbell-Forrester said persons should follow the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health to ensure good hygiene to protect against the global pandemic influenza A (H1N1 virus).

Be responsible

"The ministry has not recommended that (persons wear masks) at this time. The most important precaution is that everyone take responsibility for themselves and be considerate of others.

"Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Also, wash your hands frequently with soap and water," she said.

Campbell-Forrester pointed out that local spread was expected, but there was no need for persons to panic as the health ministry was managing the situation.

There are now 32 confirmed cases of influenza A in Jamaica. No contraction has been fatal.
