Excellent vibes, a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, a racy theme and good music breathed new life into French Connection: Amsterdam, last Saturday night at the New Kingston Golf Academy.

Patrons were greeted with a stylish and grand set-up for French Connection with an imitation of Amsterdam's Red Light District. A long carpet with glass boxes on either side containing women lounging around in lingerie had men staring longingly, with some even trying to join the women inside. In the midst of the long entrance was a Red Bull bar which had a nice club atmosphere. Further down, a mini bar greeted patrons, as well as a Häagen Dazs ice cream booth that saw a steady stream of persons throughout the night.

Great booths

Inside the main area, an elevated Red Bull booth had a crowd of persons with a dance floor in the centre which was surrounded by bars. A Matterhorn booth provided seats for weary dancers and at the back of the venue was the food area which included an array of appetisers.

Patrons loitered around the venue taking in the new set. With a smaller crowd than usual, persons were scattered throughout leaving large spaces open for persons to dance.

A dose of energy

It was a tribute from Dancing Dynamites champions, Unlimited Dancers, that brought a dose of energy to the event. DJ Bambino took over the 'wheels of steel' with a slew of Michael Jackson songs as Unlimited Dancers took to the dance floor with a show of the 'King of Pop's' famous moves. A crowd soon gathered around the dancers cheering them on as Bambino commented, "I feel like I'm at 'So You Think You Can Dance' ... what a way you mek a career out of Michael death."

After effortlessly executing a smooth moonwalk, one of the dancers ran to the DJ booth and said "Michael Jackson a we icon, so we haffi show some respect."

Following the dance routine, the patrons got down to some dancing of their own as women in heels soon kicked them off and coupled with their partner.

Renaissance Disco came on early Sunday morning with a little soca and soon entered a 'daggering' segment but the majority of crowd had begun to make an exit from Amsterdam. With all the elements in place and a nice vibe, French Connection was revamped for the summer, only needing more crowd support to really impress.
