Sagicor defeated Continental Baking Company by six wickets in the Digicel Business House cricket series Reggae Jammin 50-over league last Sunday at Chalmers Avenue.
Batting first, Continental Baking Company were skittled out for 87 in 23.1 overs - Vander Rowe 39; Junior Taylor 4-24, pacer Aaron Daley Jr 3-31.
Sagicor 88 for four - Adrian Bartley 30, Dwayne Ewart 17; Dwight McIntosh 3-18.
Meanwhile, the two other matches in the round had to be postponed. The match between Jamalco and defending champions LIME was rained out at Jamalco. The other match between Digicel and NWC at Kensington Park was not played as the ground was being used for a Senior Cup match.
The Reggae Jammin league takes a break today to facilitate the first round of the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over Knockout competition for which four matches are scheduled.
These are Jamalco vs defending champions LIME at Jamalco, St Ann Jamaica Bauxite vs Jamaica Broilers in the feature at Kaiser, Continental Baking Company vs Digicel at Kensington Park and Sagicor vs NEW at Chalmers Avenue. All matches start at 11 a.m.
The Gleaner and National Water Commission (NWC) played to a 1-1 draw in their opening round KSAFA/Western Sports-sponsored Business House Division I football match at Winchester Park, St George's College, last Monday afternoon.
Gleaner, voted the best defensive team last year by virtue of contesting both the league and KO finals, paraded a strong team, which was dominated by Cavalier Super League players. They include captain Bernard Blackwood, goalkeeper Everdeen Scarlett, Keiron Brock, Kemel Mullings, Marvin 'Buddy Boy' Stewart and club chairman and KSAFA president Rudolph Speid, who had a good game in defence.
Gleaner looked the more positive team from early and opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Mullings. But NWC hit back nine minutes later with a goal from another Cavalier player, David Laylor who tapped home from a right side corner taken by Clinton Mitchell.
In the second half, both teams got numerous chances to grab the lead, but good goalkeeping by Scarlett and his opposite number, Robert Beckford, ensured the match ended in a draw. Brock and substitute Braxton Fraser came close to scoring for Gleaner in the last 20 minutes, while NWC's captain Garfield Robinson and centre forward Rory Robinson forced Scarlett to make spectacular saves.
Meanwhile, defending Division I champions Carib Cement defeated last year's Division II champions JNBS 2-1 in the opening Division I match at the NWC playing field, Mona last Sunday. Ingi Lowe in the 23rd minute and Alexis Dobson in the 64th netted for Carib Cement, while Delano Thorpe got the consolation goal for JNBS. GraceKennedy and Norman Manley International Airport played to a goalless draw in the Division II opener.
The dress parade was won by the Scotiabank Group, ahead of NWC and Carib Cement. There were 15 participating teams.
In Division II action on Wednesday, NHT clipped newcomers Nubian Construction courtesy of an André Palmer first-half goal, while Wisynco beat Jamaica Fire Brigade with Sean Blackwood scoring in the 81st minute.
In Division I matches tomorrow, Courts will oppose Gleaner at Old Men's Hockey Field (Mona), JNBS vs NWC at Barbican playing field and Carib Cement vs NCB at Bull starting at 4 p.m.
Geon Homes clipped the Scotiabank Group 3-2 in the opening match of the Business House five-a-side football competition played at the NWC playing field, Mona, on Saturday, June 13.
Goals by Nicholas Denton, Mario McDonald and Demetrius Billiet enabled Geon Homes to pull it off, while Richard West and Nicholas McCreath replied for Scotiabank.
As many as 68 teams have entered the competition - 12 in Division I and 56 playing in four zones in Division II.
The male tournament in the Reggae Jammin volleyball league commenced at the UWI Gymnasium last Sunday with high riding JDF beating AMECO 2-0.
This was due to an all-round effort from match MVP Garth Scott and also Orane Maxwell, who had five scores including three kills and two aces, winning 21-13, 21-12.
Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) also had a 2-0 victory over NWC winning 21-6, 21-11, as John Sinclair led the way with six kills. BOJ came back to win again in the day's third make game, defeating AMECO 2-0 with Sinclair again dominating with seven kills and an ace.
The final male match of the day saw the JDF also notching their second win, this time brushing aside NWC 2-0, thanks to the efforts of Maxwell with six scores, one kill and five aces, as MVP Warrington Dixon offered good support.
In the two mixed division matches on the day, the JDF beat Guardian 'B' 2-0 and Guardian 'A' also got by UWI 2-0.
The competition continues today with six matches at the UWI Gymnasium.
Marksman ended the hopes of The Gleaner to advance in the JET-sponsored Business House Division I domino competition at the Gleaner Sports Club on Friday night, defeating the many-time champions 150-131.
Marksman, who also defeated The Gleaner in first-round action some weeks ago, led all the way to win unchallenged by 19 points. They have only lost (to Fire Brigade) in six outings, while The Gleaner have lost their last four league matches, as well as their lone KO match.
The top pair for Marksman was Jason Hamilton and Rupert King. In other Division I matches played on Friday night, leaders Berger defeated JPS 148-13, JUTC beat Port Authority 135-119, Jamaica Brandy clipped Carib Cement 120-117, Wray & Nephew surprised the 2007 champions Seprod 105-99 and Sagicor beat Jamaica Fire Brigade 137-132. In Division II, NHT whipped National Baking Company 147-116, Pepsi drubbed Companies Office of Jamaica 150-101 and STATION beat Premix 119-114. The second round of the KO competition will be played this Friday at the NHT car park, Park Boulevard.
