Taxi drivers 'dis' schoolers

The Editor, Sir:

I have a grave problem with the taxis that travel from Spanish Town to Naggo Head as it relates to school children. When I was attending school, when travelling with my younger siblings, we always had to take separate taxis. The reason for this was because the taxi men refused to take more than one 'schooler', as they termed it, which really used to upset me, and still does now. What makes it even worse is that they make it their duty to embarrass the students if they wish to travel together, sending them to their colleague drivers who do the same.

private vehicles

My parents have private vehicles and transport my younger siblings to and from school. However, one particular evening, none of them was able to pick them up, so they had to take public transportation.

My brother, who is a high school student and my younger sister, who is at the primary level, stood at the taxi stand for more than an hour, all because the taxi men refused to take them. My brother contacted my father and told him what was happening. He then requested to speak with one of the men and the situation was explained to the driver and he allowed them in his vehicle.

As far as I see, all of them are trying to make a living, but that doesn't mean that the greed mentality should be adopted. How long will we treat children as if they aren't human beings?

We must recognise that our children need love, care and support, whether they are our own or not. We all have a part to play in rearing them and when we neglect that responsibility, we are simply neglecting our future.

I am, etc.,
