In praise of Winston Virgo

I would like to offer my personal congratulations to Winston Virgo for his work in keeping cycling alive in western Jamaica and for being such a mentor among young men in the society.

I interacted with Winston during my years of international racing representing Jamaica, and he has always been a gentleman and a good example, on and off the the racing circuit.

Many could learn from his efforts in nation building.

CSME threat

Notwithstanding the laudable objectives of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), a racially prejudiced culture among member states has threatened to destabilise the CSME.

There are division among member states in regard to the free movement of goods and services and the free movement of people in possession of CARICOM passports.

As a result, CARICOM is experiencing many difficulties and challenges and, at times, many people are wondering if it will ever survive.

Foolish spending

Your editorial, 'Graduating from what', hit the nail right on the head. But another point I would have made is that after the extreme expense of the graduation folly, is the fact that these are the same parents who are unable to afford the books, uniforms and basic supplies for the coming school year.

Don't blame it allon the educators

Why is it that educators are always held accountable for students' performance? There are other issues that impact the educational process that educators cannot control.

The home plays an important role. How many parents are involved in the education of their child/children? Are the schools being provided with the necessary resources that they need to effect the teaching/learning process?

Let's be fair now!
