Driving at night requires extra defensive driving skills. In fact, it can be quite tiring as a the driver has to concentrate harder.

According to auto mechanic Kurt Harding, in order to make it safely through the night motorists should be aware of some important pointers:

1. Keep headlights clean. A dirty headlight cuts down on how much you can see.

2. If you have been driving on wet or muddy roads, stop at a safe place and clean all your lights.

3. Keep your windows and wiper blades clean, as well.

4. At nights, make use of all clues around, such as road signs, white lines and cat's eyes.

5. Make regular checks to ensure that all the lights work. Always travel with a spare bulb.

6. Driving with lights that do not work is illegal.

7. Also, remember that if you cannot stop well within the range of your light you are going too fast.

8. Slow down, you cannot stop as quickly on wet or poor road surfaces.

9. If you are dazzled do not get mad, look along the left hand side of the road.

10. Drive with the headlights on at dusk, night or dawn.

11. Watch for road signs, slow-moving vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, cart men, bikes and bicycles.

12. Keep far away from the motor vehicle in front of you.

13. Drivers should refrain from wearing sunshades at nights while driving.

14. Keep the windshield as clean as a whistle.

15. Try not to look into the headlights of the oncoming vehicles.

16. Dim your headlights to low beam when approaching or following another vehicle.

17. At nights, while driving, always be aware, alert and awake.
