Portland infirmary receives facelift

The Port Antonio Infirmary, which is home to more than 70 residents, received a much-needed facelift from the Portland Parish Council on Labour Day.

The Parish Labour Day project, which started at 9 a.m., was spearheaded by youth mayor, Samora Robertson, and seven other youth councillors.

The youth mayor said that the project was made possible through a $25,000 donation made by state minister in charge of local government matters, Robert Montague.

Wonderful experience

"The money was used to purchase paint, brushes, rollers, thinner, and putty," he said. "The turnout for the project was heavily supported, and it has been a wonderful experience for me. We are happy to be able to provide assistance to the less fortunate."

Members of the police youth club, the local Red Cross, cadet units from Port Antonio and Titchfield High schools, and other volunteers also provided assistance.

The work included the repainting of several dormitories, the canteen, recreation area, matrons' office, kitchen and verandah.

A dormitory which had fallen into a state of disrepair for some time now was also demolished by the Roads and Works Department.
