  • Hall wins Magnum pool tournament

Ewart Hall from Hot Shots Pool Bar defeated Portmore's Garfield Brown 2-1 in the final of the Magnum double elimination ranking pool tournament at Hot Shots last weekend.

Hall, who pocketed the $80,000 prize donated by Magnum and co-sponsor Century Wrecker Service, was winning his second of five ranking tournaments played so far this year.

He is on top of the players' ranking with a total of 120 points, closely followed by MoBay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove on 118, Gary Manning, 89, with last December's Kingston Beer singles champion Sunil 'Termite' Kissendal holding down fourth position with 77 points.

Kissendal and Blagrove, arguably the top two players in the island, were both beaten in this tournament. Manning also fell short in his bid.

Blagrove played sufficiently well to pocket the $15,000 third prize, having lost to Hall, but Kissendal surprisingly lost both his matches to Sunil 'Presto' Newman and Joe McLeod, respectively.

Brown secured $40,000 for finishing second and Roy Lets picked up $15,000 for fourth place. Significantly, Brown moved from 129th to 27th in the ranking.

  • Wanderers hunt double

Wanderers will tomorrow take their first step towards a double success this season when they take on Watson Grove in the first-leg final of the E-Services-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football League at Ferdie Neita Park.

Wanderers, who last Sunday copped the Colin Fagan knockout 5-4 on penalties over Greater Portmore, advanced to the final with a 2-0 aggregate win over mid-season champs Christian Pen. Watson Grove beat Garveymeade 5-4 on penalties.

The second leg of the final will be at the same venue, the following Sunday.

  • Power of Faith on the verge

Power of Faith Development (PFD) team is on the verge of advancing to the semi-finals of the Power of Faith Ministries Twenty20 Church Cricket League, and a win over Faith Temple (FT) New Testament will cement their place.

The two Zone-one teams meet in the opening game at 9:30 am at Lime Tree Oval. PFD has three points from one game. FT is pointless from one encounter. Miracle Open Bible also have three points, but from two games.

For Faith Temple, only a win would give them a chance at the next round, as a loss or a tie would see them eliminated.

In the feature game at 1:30 pm, Power of Faith seniors and Braeton New Testament play in a top-of-the-table clash. Both teams won their opening games last week.

  • Eagle View still unbeaten

Unbeaten leaders Eagle View made it 19-in-a-row last Sunday when they defeated Hurricane 300-292 in the feature match of the CTL Portmore/St. Catherine domino league last Sunday. The 19th- round match was played at Hurricane Club in Dunbeholden.

Meanwhile, Marlie Mount created a notable upset over high-flying Eradication, winning 300-283 at Marlie Mount.

Results of other matches played last Sunday are as follows:

Caribbean Classic crushed Ken's Wildflower 300-242, Masterpiece beat Seamaster 300-253, Old Harbour United clipped Westchester 300-292, Prozz and Conzz drubbed Old Harbour Bay 300-239, Correctional Services beat Colours 300-274, Right Stiff defeated Lime Tree 300-262. Fort International gained a walkover from New Look, as did Ackee Pod over Garveymeade and ISCF over High Roller.

The latest points standings are as follows: Eagle View on top with 76 points from 19 matches, followed by Fort International 70 from 19, Masterpiece 62 from 19, Eradication 59 but from 18 matches and Caribbean Classic 59 from 19.

The competition continues tomorrow with three rescheduled matches. Eradication vs Old Harbour United at Gregory Park, New Look vs Right Stuff and Colours at home to ISCF.

  • Ramble win mid-season title

Ramble Sport Club defeated Heartease United 2-1 to take home the Dr. Fenton Ferguson-sponsored St. Thomas Division Two mid-season title.

In the final played last Sunday at the Cotton Tree Oval in Port Morant, Ramble, from the remote community in the Yallahs Area, did not let down the hundreds of fans, who travelled to support them.

Ramble got settled early in the game and it was no surprise when they were rewarded in the 30th minute of play. Ricardo Sterling spotted the Heartease goalkeeper off his line and fired a thunderous volley from just outside the penalty area into the back of the net, which stunned the large Heartease contingent into deafening silence.

Heartease were awakened by this shocker and took the fight to Ramble through Elvis Gray, Damian Miller and Gregory Miller. They soon equalised via a penalty by Gregory Miller.

That, however, was shortlived as Ramble were awarded an indirect free kick, resulting from the Heartease goalkeeper handling the ball from a back pass made by a teammate. The ball was passed across the edge of the penalty area where Ricardo Sterling placed it wide of the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 in favour of Ramble.

At the resumption Heartease came out with a sense of urgency and should have equalised but were let down by poor shooting from Gregory Miller in particular.

Ramble received a trophy and $10,000. Heartease collected $5,000 at the presentation ceremony that followed.

The second round of the competition will resume on Tuesday, April 14, with Ramble vs Paul at Llandewey and Seaforth vs Heartease at York.

  • Manchester Primary cricket

The fifth renewal of the Manchester/INSPORTS/Wheels and Wheels Primary School Cricket competition received an added injection of capital during a press launch at the National Stadium's hospitality room earlier this week.

Bentley Hibbert, managing director of Wheels and Wheels Auto Brokers Ltd, disclosed his company will be pumping a further $100,000 in increased sponsorship this year, totaling $850,000.

"I never knew this competition would have got so big, honestly," said Hibbert, before announcing the new increased sponsorship from his company.

Through the continuous support from the auto brokerage firm and the Institute of Sports, the competition has also seen a jump in participation.

Thirty primary schools, all from the parish of Manchester, will compete in this year's event, four more than the previous season.

Woodlands Primary, reigning national Under-12 champions, will begin the defence of their parochial crown on April 22 in one of eight scheduled matches across the parish.

Administrative director for INSPORT, Ian Andrews, while imploring discipline and respect, also encouraged the 30 students who were in attendance to aspire towards representing their country and the West Indies.

This year's champions will walk away with $50,000, second $30,000, third $20,000. Cash incentives of $10,000 apiece will be awarded to individuals scoring most runs, taking most wickets and best wicketkeeper.

  • Old Harbour Bay in doubt

Following a fine start to the season, Old Harbour Bay are fighting to advance to the knockout stage of the INSPORT/SDC St Catherine Community Football League as they were beaten 1-0 by Old Harbour last weekend in the derby at Soya Oval.

Old Harbour, however, are out of contention despite their morale-boosting win over arch-rivals Old Harbour Bay (nine points), who stayed in second spot in zone three on goal difference.

But 'Bay' could still fail to advance as they can be passed by Windsor Road (eight points), who have a rescheduled game against the already-qualified zone leaders Morgan's Lane (11 points).

Windsor Road took a major step towards grabbing the second and final available qualifying spot after cutting down Macca Tree 7-1 in the feature match at Homestead. Earlier, Morgan's Lane became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over Kitson Town.
