Don't play this game
Published: Friday | March 13, 2009
The concern is growing in many quarters as it relates to the global economic crisis. Jamaica was advised not to panic. I dare say that it is hard not to do so, in the face of what is staring us in the face.
There is no doubt that whatever happens in the US will definitely have an impact on the Jamaican economy. Jamaica cannot play the wait-and-see game. Jamaica needs to become self-sufficient.
Why not look at agriculture in a positive way? For instance, try to barter - go back to basics. Look at ways of exporting more and creating the necessary avenues for the ordinary man to utilise his skills in investing in a venture he is good at.
Jamaica cannot focus on remittances, which are declining. Although still a marketable product, tourism is not showing any sign of increased revenues.
If Jamaicans allow someone else to determine their future we may never have a future. Jamaicans are now faced with a situation like that of preparing oneself for a hurricane. There may be harder times ahead but to wait and see is a disaster waiting to happen.
