Issue: Offer Air Jamaica shares to the public

The Editor, Sir:

Kindly allow us to express our views as upper-sixth form economics students from St Catherine High School on the Air Jamaica situation.

On January 27, during our class discussion on the national debt situation of Jamaica, our focus turned to the operation of Air Jamaica and the high losses it was incurring.

In this present economic climate of uncertainty, it appears that the authorities have no solution.

It might be very difficult to find a buyer in this climate, especially when airlines worldwide are failing.

Diaspora

We are suggesting that the Government of Jamaica sell the company to the Jamaican population. This would include the Jamaica Diaspora too.

Each Jamaican would buy a share in the company and this could raise the revenue needed to keep the company going.

Or, the Government could own 50 per cent and the public 50 per cent.

The fact is we are paying for Air Jamaica every day to make a loss. So, why not at least own the company outright?

Incentive to work

In addition, once it is owned by the Jamaican public, each Jamaican would give an incentive to see it work.

Patriotism would actually pay us directly. Efficiency would have to be integral to the operation of the company.

We also believe that if there are to be a positive changes in our economy, the citizens must work with the Government to solve our problems, but the Government must think creatively.

We are, etc.,
