Keith Hinds - File

During the first half of Portmore Crack-Up on Sunday night at Klub Klymaxx, Portmore Pines Plaza, there were a couple of jokes about the municipality's Mayor, Keith Hinds, notably about his very large frame.

At the start of the second segment, anyone who thought that fun was being poked at Mayor Hinds behind his broad back realised that this was not the case, as he took the microphone and took a decent crack at joking around himself.

Naturally, with Portmore's own Pretty Boy Floyd hosting and the hilarious, proud resident Elva placed in the pre-intermission slot, there were many references to the Sunshine City before a full house. There were hoots of laughter when Elva pointed out that Portmore now has an 'uptown', Caribbean Estates and Portmore Country Club, and how some people who live in these developments try to distance themselves from Portmore.

Still, Elva pointed out, it is Portmore.

Hooting and hollering

Parts of a very successful night of comedy were physical; Gunter stood side-on to the audience to show how he could look like a lollipop, Ragashanti and Floyd acted out a DNA results show on Maury, Ity and Fancy Cat demonstrated how P.J. Patterson, Bruce Golding and Portia Simpson Miller would react if they got the 'shoeing' George Bush had and Tony 'Paleface' Hendriks demonstrated the 'Penguin', delivered by an underpaid hooker.

There were references to outstanding events last year, as both Gunter and Ity and Fancy Cat, who put the lid on things in sparkling fashion after Paleface's extended, excellent showing, did 2008 reviews.

Called out

And Elva went back to the Sting 2008 clash, telling Vybz Kartel to sell his condoms and rum as they are not in any store and advising Mavado to help out some young artistes.

Paleface had the night's most extended showing, in which it was clear that he has moved to England but not away from Jamaica.

Sunday's Portmore Crack-Up debut marked a return to the municipality of a laughter brand which started at the now defunct Cactus Nightclub 10 years ago. The Ellis International production will be staged on the last Sunday of each month.
