... Charge them

The Editor, Sir:

After watching clips of the clash between Vybz Kartel and Mavado at Sting 2008 on the Internet, the following questions come to mind: Is this what we call entertainment? Where is the promise from the promoters that so many persons who were not performers would not be allowed onstage? Will Vybz Kartel and Mavado be charged for their use of profanity onstage? Shouldn't the use of profanity in public carry a higher fine that will really hit the perpetrators where it really hurts - in their pockets?

Was this the best way for these two 'artistes' to show their talent?

Indecency

If this is what so many thousands spent their hard-earned money to watch, well, we are in trouble. If this act of indecency, lewdness and gross disrespect flies by without the intervention of the police and the minister of culture, then we look forward to more children and women being brutalised in 2009. Yes, there is a link.

As a Jamaican, I was really embarrassed and disturbed while watching this video. And what is most unfortunate about this whole scenario is that many of our young middle-class professionals and intellectuals endorse this event.

The promoters of Sting, Mavado, Vybz Kartel and those who hold them up as role models ought to take a look at themselves.

I am, etc.,
