Six ways to be beautiful

Published: Monday | December 29, 2008

Women seem willing to do almost anything in the name of beauty. That often involves joining the eternal search for solutions to annoying beauty dilemmas. Often they end up grabbing the millionth new product from the shelf as it promises to solve the problem, only to be left disappointed. Procedures often join that group by not producing the desired result, but still the search continues. Why? Because despite the highs and lows, the consultations with magazines and friends, women often find that 'miracle' product or procedure which they swear by.

Here are six things that Flair did in the name of beauty in 2008.

1 - Permanent cosmetics

You can permanently line your eyes, line your lips and fill in thin eyebrows. Using the Softap method, each procedure takes an hour and a half to complete, according to Flo Neil, aesthetician and permanent make-up technician. All procedures can be done the same day. Not for those with a phobia for commitment, the results last for years, depending on the person.

2 - Airbrushing

Light as a feather with a flawless finish. It is the procedure of the movie stars where foundation and eyeshadow colours are squirted through an airbrush pen, on to your face. Airbrush make-up is waterproof and ideal for long photo shoots, weddings and any special occasion that you need to look perfect for hours.

3 - Botox

( L - R ) Before, After

The Hollywood procedure has apparently made it to our island and is gaining popularity. Botox injections decrease the appearance of wrinkles and creases on the face. Tiny needles with a purified protein, called clostridium botulinum, is injected into the particular area of the skin. According to Dr Arusha Campbell-Chambers, a clinical and cosmetic dermatologist, it is a safe procedure once performed by a trained doctor, the effects can look very natural.

4 - Mineral make-up

Some say it works, it's healthy make-up for your face. Others believe it is all just hype. But one thing for sure, this year, most make-up manufacturers latched on to mineral make-up, producing this healthier foundation and other cosmetics.

5 - Microdermabrasion

Primarily used to rejuvenate the skin, microdermabrasion was named the lunchtime peel because of its quick recovery time. According to dermatologist Dr Frances Berry, microdermabrasion is a resurfacing technique, which involves the combination of suction and buffing or lightly abrading the skin with crystals to remove or exfoliate the outer layers. The process takes 15-20 minutes and is relatively painless.

6 - Lipomassage

Reduce the appearance of cellulite and stubborn body fat with a lipomassage. A non-evasive procedure, it helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite for the individuals who, despite working in the gym, still spot cellulite. Performed using a machine called a Cellu M6 Keymodule, or Lipo M6, the procedure feels similar to a deep tissue massage.
