There were tons of reasons to laugh at the Christmas Comedy Cook-up held at Backyaad, Constant Spring Road on Boxing Day. The jokes were on Jamaicans as the many comedians spoke about the idiosyncrasies of Jamaican and other Caribbean people.
From the anatomical imperfections of Marc Trinidad's ears to talks of dining in, the anatomy was on the minds of everyone at Backyaad.
In between the comedic performances, additional laughter was provided in the musical form. Noel Ellis, the late Alton's first born, did a number of popular songs to a largely unimpressed audience. His shining moment though came in a version of Too Late to Apologize in which he sang about the economic crunch with the refrain "too much fi poun a rice'.
It takes a special kind of comedian to command laughter without uttering a word. Marc Trinidad is one such. From the moment he entered the stage, there was laughter from the audience, one man exclaiming 'damn!'.
A white man wearing a suit does not usually engender laughter, but again, Marc Trinidad is the exception.
"I appreciate your honesty, but sometimes your honesty gets in the way of good manners," Trinidad said to the capacity crowd.
Mr Potato Head
"By round of applause, how many people in here think I look like a white Mr Potato Head? Like the Taco Bell dog? Like a VW with the doors open?", Trinidad asked. There was thunderous applause. As soon as he got his ears out of the way he went on to speak about the idiosyncrasies of people from the Caribbean.
Jamaicans' creativity and national pride was commended, as was Trinidad's ability to make great things, like the steel pan, out of nothing.
"We take things that people are throwing away and we make something good. That's why we have so much Guyanese in Trinidad," he said, a pause emphasising the 'diss'. There was a loud moan from the crowd, before Trinidad clarified, "They want to learn to do that too".
Anatomy was also on the agenda for Trinidad, who said he once attempted to prove he was more black than white by dropping his pants for a woman. Her reaction: "Oh my God. I'm so sorry. I didn't know you were Chinese!"
"I'm a black man trapped in a white man's body with a Chinese man's pp I guess that's why my passport says Caucasian," he said to laughter.
Later, after a humourous and enjoyable performance from Lloyd Lovindeer, who sang about his Fowl Farm, his Bun Bow Cloth and cooking and eating with Lady G, Ity and Fancy Cat brought laughter Jamaican style with their Olympic flashback, more talk about eating and a parody of Reneto Adams' raid on the home of Vybz Kartel.
Shoe-throwing incident
Their take on the presidential shoe-throwing incident from a Jamaican perspective elicited tons of laughter: PJ Patterson passing the baton to Portia Simpson Miller at the toss of the first shoe, Prime Minister Bruce Golding cautioning 'Not in my Cabinet!" at the sight of the raised footwear and with Portia turning from conciliator to aggressor, her much publicised rant, 'me nuh fraid a nuh bwoy...' tearing the house down.
Blakka Ellis spoke briefly about the Jamaican contradictions before introducing Trixx, a Ghanaian-Canadian. Trixx closed the show in fine style holding the mirror up to the Jamaicans in the audience.
"Only a Jamaican can stop in the middle of the race, look back ... yuh not coming?..." he said about Usain Bolt's Olympic performance.
He said since drugs were taken out of the sport the world has realised that Jamaicans were the fastest people in the world.
Romantic nature
"Jamaicans took every medal. They took medals for things they weren't even participating in," he said to laughter.
He also had some words for the romantic nature, or lack thereof of Jamaican men. "Only a Jamaican can take the nicest thing you can say to a woman and turn it into something gangster," he said in reference to Mavado's Squeeze Har B....
Laughter also came courtesy of Leighton Smith, Dr Michael Abrahams and hosts Pretty Boy Floyd and Miss Kitty.
You Eat, You Cook: The banter of Lady G and Lloyd Lovindeer entertained at Comedy Cook-up.
