EDITORIAL - Uncertainty of sugar divestment
The agriculture minister, Dr Christopher Tufton, and the administration generally, would appreciate why we are not sanguine about the planned divestment of the state-owned sugar company to the Brazilian-based firm, Infinity Bio-Energy.

Where do we go from here?
Earlier this month, the country was treated to the frightening spectacle, in Gravel Heights, St Catherine, of police assisting citizens in moving from their community from which they had been evicted by criminal gunmen. The Officer in charge of the Division subsequently apologised for the 'poor police tactics' but still the people left...

Ken, Hartley, me and The Gleaner
Second-time retiring opinion editor Ken Allen has on many occasions made my day by calling to say he particularly liked a column I had submitted. I value Ken's opinion on matters of writing more than anybody else's that I know, and will deeply miss him as he finally departs The Gleaner.

Swansongs and Auld Lang Syne
Every good thing must come to an end and even those that are not so good. Well, those too. And this column is one of them. For the past four and a half years, I occupied this small room bequeathed by the likes of Morris Cargill and the recently departed Hartley Neita. Now, although I still trod the land of the living, I must make my own ride off into the sunset and disappear.

Liberalise gun laws
It is quite alarming the rising murder rate that the country has been experiencing over the last 20 years. Governments over this period have given very little assurance to the population that they know how to tackle the problem. Despite their best intentions and the numerous high-level police units put in place ... we have not had many successes.
