Miller and Dawes in Jamaica squad

Published: Sunday | December 21, 2008

HORACE MILLER and Jason Dawes are in line to make their first-class debuts after being selected in Jamaica's Carib Beer squad, which also see the return of Wavell Hinds, yesterday. Miller, an opening batsman, and fast bowler Dawes, both represented the West Indies Under-19 team.

Miller was also one of the outstanding players for Jamaica at last month's regional one-day tournament while Dawes, it was said, missed selection to the West Indies team because of injury earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Hinds, who cut short last season to take up a professional contract overseas, is expected to marshall the batting department in the absence of the West Indies players.

Legspinner Gavin Wallace, who played for the Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) last year, was also included and could get his first Jamaican cap.

Brenton Parchment, Danza Hyatt, Donovan Pagon, Tamar Lambert, Keith Hibbert, David Bernard Jr, Odean Brown, Andre Russell, Andrew Richardson and Lorenzo Ingram complete the squad, which has three away matches in the Leewards, Trinidad and Tobago and against the CCC (in Barbados) to start its campaign.

Batting concern

Junior Bennett, the team's coach, is comfortable with the make up of the squad but expressed some concerns in the batting department.

"I think it's a good all-round squad ... we just have to put things together and prepare for the season," Bennett said. "It (batting) is a concern to us, I don't think we batted as well as we could have and it is one area now we have to look at."

In the last trial match, which ended yesterday, bowlers dominated to force an early end.

Dawes, who took 5-51 in the Parchment XI's first innings of 148, and Ricardo Dacres, with 4-20 in the Lambert XI's first innings total of 145, were the bowling stars.

Miller, 43, and Hibbert, 40, in Lambert's first and second innings, respectively, along with Bernard Jr's 55 in Parchment's first innings, were the pick of the batsmen.
