KSAFA's Wayne Shaw ... recent football season was highly successful.

  • St Ann Bauxite clip Broilers in KO final

St Ann Jamaica Bauxite rebounded from their recent defeat to Cable & Wireless in the Digicel 20/20 cricket final with a four-wicket victory over highly-fancied Jamaica Broilers in the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over final at Kensington Park last Sunday.

Both teams will meet again today in the semi-finals of the Reggae Jammin 50-over competition at Jamaica Broilers ground, Spring Village in St Catherine, starting at 10 a.m.

The winner of this match will meet defending champions Jamaica Broilers in the final at Kensington Park on Sunday, December 28.

Batting first in the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over final, Jamaica Broilers were dismissed for 136 in 29.5 overs.

After losing opener Dean Anderson for eight to the bowling of former Jamaica player Orville Pennant and losing two more wickets before the score had reached 40, opening batsman Andrew Davis batted well for 59 while, lower down the order, Fabian Lakeman chipped in with 14 and Aaron Daley Jr, 12. Pennant finished with 4-21 off six overs, while Damar Davis claimed 2-26.

St Ann Jamaica Bauxite replied with 138 for six in 29.4 overs, winning the match with only two balls to spare.

Pennant, batting at number four, capped a fine all-round performance with a top score of 45, while opener Marlon Pinnock got 26 and Rogjohn Henry 16 not out.

Fabian Bryan took 3-39 from 5.4 overs and Wayne Morgan 2-16 from six.

For today's Reggae Jammin semi-final, Jamaica Broilers will again be without the services of national player Keith Hibbert who, along with St Ann Bauxite's fast bowler Ricardo Dacres, is playing in the final trial match to select Jamaica's team for the upcoming four-day regional series.

Despite this, both teams are strong on paper and it promises to be another close encounter. The two sides are seeking their second trophy of the season, Broilers having beaten Jamalco in the 35-over final on December 7.

  • Business House football season a success, says Shaw

Wayne Shaw, president of the KSAFA Business House Football Association, described the recently concluded season as highly successful and said it promises to be even better next year.

Speaking on Friday, Shaw said the first big plus was that the Business House competition was able to attract sponsorship this year from Western Sports in the league (Division One and Two) and Scotiabank in the knockout competition involving teams in both divisions.

"This helped us a lot. Our presentation function at the Scotiabank Sports Club offered more awards and cash incentives as a result of the sponsorship and, all in all, the teams are grateful," said Shaw.

He said a greater effort will be made to attract more teams to the league next year.

"This year's competition attracted 17 Business House sides, nine in Division One and eight in Division Two. This is a far cry from the halcyon days of the '80s when the competition facilitated over 50 teams, but I guess that in today's economic climate it will be difficult to increase the number beyond 20," he said.

"From all indications, most business houses are gravitating towards the five-a-side competition which is co-sponsored by Tank-Weld and Ciclon. That competition accommodated as many as 64 teams this year, but I guess it is more economical for the companies to focus on a smaller outfit.

"The entry fee for the five-a-side competition was $25,000 as against $50,000 for the league. Still, I can't complain. We got good publicity for all the competitions and I must commend The Gleaner for its support," concluded Shaw.

Carib Cement won the Division One league title, beating The Gleaner in the final, as well as the Challenge Trophy, defeating Division Two champions JNBS in the final, while Petrojam won the KO title on penalty kicks against The Gleaner.
