MAY PEN, CLARENDON:
The Alcoa foundation through Jamalco in Clarendon has given grants of over US$200,000 (J$15.9 million) to numerous charity organisations this year.
To cement the gifts, a presentation, which included letters of commitment to the institutions, was held at Jamalco's conference room last Friday.
Representatives from institutions that were given grants last year were also present, as there had been no ceremony in 2007.
Jerome Maxwell, Jamalco's managing director, said that although the global economic crisis had impacted on the Alcoa Foundation, it was hoped next year would be better.
The foundation has made grants of over US$466 million globally and US$1.5 million (J$119.6 million) in Jamaica alone.
Winsome Wilkins, executive director of united way of Jamaica, one of the organisations awarded, thanked the Alcoa Foundation and said recipients should ensure successful programmes.
