Animals are perhaps a literal example of ideal gifts which do not stop giving. They may serve as invaluable companions which are also constantly protective of their owners. With Christmas fast approaching, an animal shelter, such as the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA), could be a haven for shoppers without ideas for gifts.

Pamela Lawson, general manager of the JSPCA, explained the process of adopting a pet.

"Adoption is quite simple and basic. Come in the morning, adopt the animal and pick it up the next day. The only thing is, you will not get the animal on the same day, because every animal that leaves here needs to be neutered," said Lawson.

Vast array of breeds

Despite the uncomplicated process, you will not be short on choices when adopting.

The shelter receives approximately 100 animals per month and, among dogs, there is a vast array of breeds.

The adoption of a dog would certainly be fashionable. Canine infatuation has been in vogue recently with both President-elect Barack Obama and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden on the hunt for the perfect pup.

Biden recently adopted a German Shepherd puppy but Obama is yet to commit to a particular breed.

No fleeting gift

But, despite the suggestively easy adoption system, an animal is not a fleeting gift.

Lawson made certain to point out to The Gleaner that the recipient of an animal should be willing and able to care for it.

"We have to be very careful in making sure we know what they [the recipient of an animal] want in a dog. If they say the reason for buying a dog is for a Christmas gift, then I say, 'give me a better reason'," said Lawson.

Thus, decisions about animal adoption should be given careful consideration.

The warning from the JSPCA need not deter anyone from giving an animal. It should, in fact, act as encouragement, suggests Lawson.

Pets require much care and attention but also return it generously.

Animals are therefore perfect gifts for responsible and able owners.
