Fighting with unity

Published: Thursday | December 11, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The recent exodus of persons from a community is only one of many examples that we, the law-abiding majority of this beautiful country, have given up our rights to the lawless, who are the minority. Gone are the days when the community would stand together to protect each other ... or are they?

We seem to forget that we received our freedom through the blood, sweat and tears of our forefathers who were slaves - victimised and abused. But, they said, "No more! No more!". They didn't have guns, but they fought with whatever weapons they had.

Fighting gunmen

We don't need to bear arms to fight the gunmen! We need unity! If we all come together, agreeing that we will not allow the minority causing mayhem and fear to prevail, we can achieve much.

Nanny and Sam Sharpe, who are our heroes, surely knew in their hearts that they would not see freedom, but were willing to die fighting for it, nonetheless. We are so concerned with preserving our lives that we fail to recognise that we are losing it at the hands of gunmen, who couldn't care less!

Someone once asked: "If what you are living for is not worth dying for, then is it worth living for?" Are we prepared to take up the fight?

I am, etc.,
