Think of the victims

Published: Sunday | November 23, 2008

The Editor, SIR:

I AM a member of the United States Army and have been living in America since January of 1989. The maximum punishment for committing a murder is death by a firing squad. I have been an ardent reader of http://www.go-Jamaica.com and it is sad to read, on a daily/weekly basis, about the numerous crimes being committed against the innocent.

Jamaica is contemplating the death penalty right now. Some are for its imposition, while others are against it. I, for one, am in favour of the resumption of the death penalty in Jamaica. No matter the means of carrying out the execution, I think doing so may bring closure to the families affected by the senseless killing of their loved ones.

The death penalty may not be the complete deterrence to these heinous crimes, but we must not forget the victims. The victims may have pleaded for their life, but the criminals still killed them. The death penalty should be imposed for rape, murders and drug-related crimes.

I am, etc.,
