Walker to the fore with four
published: Thursday | November 20, 2008

Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

Walker

RETURNING CHAMPION jockey Omar Walker stole the show at Caymanas Park yesterday, thanks to a fabulous four-timer on the nine-race programme.

His winners were 7-5 favourite QUEEN OF MY HEART for trainer Robert Darby Sr in the second race over 1500 metres, unbeaten 2-5 favourite LITTLE WASP, who duly completed the hat-trick for his guv'nor, Wayne DaCosta, in the third race, as well as 8-1 chance DON'T STAY NAKED in the seventh and 9-5 chance OUTSTANDING, for trainer Gresford Smith, in the eighth race over the straight for open allowance horses. Walker thus pushed his season's tally to to 127 wins - 34 clear of closest rival Dane Nelson, who rode one winner, the 10-1 chance ARIZONA SUNSHINE for trainer Errol Waugh in the fourth race over 1600 metres, and is on course to ride 100 winners this season.

Fighting best

Walker was at his fighting best aboard OUTSTANDING, putting it across the stylish Panamanian jockey Dick Cardenas aboard the even-money favourite SMOOTHABILITY over the straight five course.

Both fillies galloped on to the main track in a neck-and-neck duel and with the race looking to go either way leaving the furlong pole, Walker dug deep aboard top weight OUTSTANDING, applying the left-hand stick vigorously throughout the last furlong to beat SMOOTHABILITY on the outside by a head. Eight ran.

Cardenas, who has been dubbed 'Mr One A Day' by turfites since riding locally for the first time last month, was again on the receiving end aboard 4-5 favourite NAVAL COMMANDER in the Abbie Grannum Memorial Cup 2-y-o feature (maidens) over 1400 metres, won by 2-1 second favourite HE'S REALLY OK.

Owned and bred by Patrick Smellie, HE'S REALLY OK made most to turn for home a clear leader. At this stage, NAVAL COMMANDER, who was slowly into stride and outpaced, made rapid headway from the half mile to straighten four lengths third (wide).

Although looking likely to make a race of it approaching the distance, NAVAL COMMANDER failed to carry through the effort leaving the furlong pole, as HE'S REALLY OK, ridden by Elvis Murray, breezed home by 2 3/4 lengths. SIR JAADU BABA was declared a late non-starter, reducing the field to eight.

A roan colt by He'stherealthing out of the Slick Trick mare Ok Mom, HE'S REALLY OK notched his first win on this his second outing. He is trained by Fredrick Watson.
