Many thanks
published: Sunday | November 16, 2008

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Many thanks for the lovely review of my book, City of Kingston Souvenir 1807-2006.

It is important to note that among the judgements made of a people, the capital of its nation is critical.

Just after Independence, several important studies indicated we would meet disastrous ends if we did not address critical issues. We ignored the warning and allowed Kingston to be most destroyed.

I implore everyone to read the three articles reproduced in my book:

  • The Downtown Problem

  • The Harbour Problem

  • The Gully Problem.

All is not lost. Most cities go through periods of growth and decline, but I would like in my lifetime to see Kingston return to its glory.

Of the original 1960s team, Gloria Knight and Mayer Matalon have left us, while Maurice Facey and Edward Seaga are still with us. Prime Minister Bruce Golding, Minister Audley Shaw and Senator Desmond McKenzie have their work cut out for them.

Fortunately, our city is built on a strong foundation.

    I am, etc.,

    Anthony Johnson

    Ambassador
