Lee Chin receives honorary doctorate
published: Wednesday | November 12, 2008

Lee Chin

Michael Lee Chin, chairman of National Commercial Bank (NCB), is imploring graduates of the University of the West Indies (UWI), to persevere, be bold, empathetic, aspire to greatness, become role models and have standards of excellence.

These attributes, he said, would help them maximise their power in the marketplace and give them a voice in the system to eradicate inequities, and to guarantee every Jamaican the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Lee Chin was delivering the graduation address after being awarded the Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) degree for his achievements in international finance, entrepreneurship and philanthropy at the UWI, Mona campus, last Saturday.

Thank you all

He thanked the university for the award and said he felt humbled to be included in the annual presentation of graduates.

"As chairman of NCB, I have seen the excellence of your graduates fulfilling our motto of 'Building a Better Jamaica'.

"In spite of the achievements that I have enjoyed in Canada and the love I have for a country that embraced a humble immigrant and allowed him to rise in the world of business, I must confess that nothing has been as gratifying to me as being able to meaningfully participate in the socio-economic development of my homeland and the region," he said.
