MOVEMENTS dancers go through their routine in a recent performance. - Contributed

The 27th Annual Concert Season of MOVEMENTS is set for November 7 to 9 with a gala performance on Friday, November 7 at Little Theatre, St Andrew.

This season has a mix of five choreographers, including international choreographer Christopher Huggins.

Huggins, known for his modern contemporary style, has created works for major dance companies in America, Europe and Asia.

MOVEMENTS will feature six pieces including new works by choreographers Michael Holgate and Neila Ebanks.

Dance creation

Holgate, who currently serves as assistant staff tutor at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at the University of the West Indies, offers his dance creation, 'Dance Spectrum'.

This original piece, he explains, is an examination of "dance through the prism of 'riddim', incorporating elements of folk, African and pop culture."

Neila Ebanks says her inspiration arose from personal observations as people are "more and more, wrongly exporting the character of Jamaica as solely being a country with a culture of violence, which it truly is not."

She titled her dance, 'Lest We Perish', the name being derived from a verse in Jamaica's Anthem.

Audience favourites

Other dances on show this season include the remounting of three audience favourites: artistic director, Monica Campbell McFarlane's 'Ushindi', a work celebrating the spirit through music and movement; Cuban choreographer Narcisco Medina's classic work, 'Metamorphosis' from 2007 and 'Tears of War', an introspective piece inspired by the casualties of war choreographed by Christopher Huggins, which debuted during MOVEMENTS' 2006 season.
