Three newcomers named in Jamaica's squad
published: Sunday | October 19, 2008

Marshall

THREE NEWCOMERS - Yanick Elliott, Horace Miller and Gavin Wallace - have been included in an inexperienced Jamaica squad to defend their regional one-day cricket title.

The Ruddy Williams-led selection panel was forced to draft in these players as Chris Gayle, Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell, Brendan Nash, Nikita Miller, Xavier Marshall, Shawn Findlay and Carlton Baugh will be on tour with the West Indies team in Dubai when the event starts.

Bastmen Elliott and Miller and legspinner Wallace, who played first-class cricket for the Combined Colleges last season, will be joined in the squad by Tamar Lambert, Brenton Parchment, Lorenzo Ingram, Danza Hyatt, David Bernard Jr, Donovan Sinclair, Andrew Richardson, André Russell, Bevon Brown, Krishmar Santokie and Keith Hibbert.

Coach Junior Bennett admitted it was an inexperienced squad, but said: "Having lost eight players to West Indies duties ... the selectors came up with a well-balanced outfit Now, we just have to do some work over the next few weeks."

"These players have been playing for a number of years now, so they will have to come and step up to the plate," he said.

Scored century

In yesterday's final match, Xavier Marshall scored a century, 110 off 88 deliveries, for Lambert's XI.

Marshall, who hit eight sixes and as many fours, was supported by Horace Miller, who was not out on 62 as Lambert's XI achieved victory at 194 for one.

Earlier, Carlton Baugh Jr hit 61, with four sixes and a four, and Brenton Parchment supported with 52, with two sixes and two fours, in Parchment's XI's 190 for eight.

Ricardo D'Acres took 4-30, while Andrew Richards and Akeem Dewar claimed two wickets each.
