Excelsior qualify for Walker Cup
published: Sunday | October 19, 2008

EXCELSIOR AND St George's College played to a 3-3 draw in their final Group E ISSA/Pepsi/-Digicel Manning Cup encounter at Courtney Walsh Oval yesterday.

The result means Excelsior qualify for the Walker Cup as Group winners with 26 points, two more than St. George's 24

Kemal Malcolm, with strikes in the eighth and 12th minutes, and Shamar Shelton (18th) scored for St George's.

Leon Powell (14th), Phillip Biggs (19th) and Juvanne Benjamin (89th) were on target for Excelsior.

After a brisk start to the game which saw five goals scored in the first 20 minutes, the game turned into a slugfest as neither team seemed to be playing with a plan.

Both did come close to score late in the first half but poor shot selection let them down. Upon resumption, it was the same story.

Equaliser

However, to the delight of the home spectators, Excelsior found the equaliser when substitute Benjamin fired home from a cross, which St George's goalkeeper Jevaughn Lennon failed to clear.

St George's coach Neville 'Bertis' Bell said it was a good schoolboy game, but said his team's defence let the side down.

"It was a bad game for us," he said, explaining why his side went 2-0 and 3-2 before settling for a draw. "We need to improve at the back," he said, adding they had given up 19 goals in 10 games.

Campion 0 Manley 2; Tivoli 9 Spanish Town 0; Penwood 0 Ascot 2; DQ 3 St Mary's 0; Ardenne 4 Greater Portmore 0; Excelsior 3 St George's 3; Waterford 1 Calabar 1.
