Bad care at Spanish Town Hospital
published: Sunday | October 19, 2008

It takes patience to get service at public-health facilities like the Spanish Town Hospital.- Peta-Gaye Clachar/Staff Photographer

The Editor, Sir:

MY GRANDMOTHER had a mild stroke recently. She could not move her left leg or arm. She went to the Spanish Town Hospital where she was given some medication and discharged, even though she was in no condition to be discharged.

No tests were run because the machines were said to be broken. The doctor even complained about her being let in because she had a bad case of pink-eye.

Once she got home, she seemed to be getting worse. My mother didn't want to take her back to Spanish Town Hospital because of the bad care received there.

We tried calling Andrews Memorial Hospital to have her admitted there but the number kept ringing without an answer.

I used to get very upset and defensive when Jamaica was portrayed by the media as a poverty- stricken Third-World nation; but no access to basic health care does make the case for this portrayal.

My aunt had a stroke some time last year and couldn't even get a CT scan.

My question to the Ministry of Health is: What is being done to improve the health-care system in Jamaica, and what is the time frame for these improvements?

My question to you my fellow Jamaicans is: When are we going to start holding our leaders accountable?

Evil flourishes when good people do nothing.

I am, etc.,
