Police too tardy
published: Sunday | October 19, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Lately, A friend of mine was a victim of a household robbery in a prominent residential area in Montego Bay not 10 minutes from the nearest police station.

All that was taken from her by the police was her address, name and telephone number and for hours she waited to no avail.

Now, this is not one of those communities where the police has to go with full body armour and guns blazing. This is a respectable community where some of the best of the city's successful professionals reside.

The tardiness of the police nowadays is highly unacceptable and each case should be treated with the most urgency. No wonder we have so many reports of murders, rapes, robberies, shootings and kidnapping of our nations children.

As a nation we find that our confidence in the police is deteriorating each day and they are the ones that are making it bad for themselves. Its quite unfair to say that every police officer is the same, but as you know, one bad apple spoils the lot.

The police need to take a preventative approach to the onslaught of crime in our country and refrain from waiting for it to happen in order come up with a solution. They need to restore the publics faith in them and have us know that we can trust them.

I am, etc.,
