Crocodiles invade Riverton
published: Tuesday | October 14, 2008

Residents of Riverton City, off Spanish Town Road, St Andrew, are at risk of being attacked by huge crocodiles now roaming the streets of the inner-city community.

The reptiles, which are an endangered species, have been forced from their ever-dwindling habitat.

Some crocodiles that lived in the Duhaney River have reportedly moved to an adjoining drain on Riverton Boulevard.

The pathway linking the drain and the river has been blocked by debris and shrubbery since the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav in August.

Since then, the crocs have been unable to return to the river and have taken up residence in the drain. From the drain, they sometimes enter the community.

Chris Nakash, director of Nakash Construction and Engineering Limited, Riverton City, told The Gleaner yesterday that he was concerned for the safety of residents and the animals.

Last month, residents killed one crocodile. Two others are still on the loose. Nakash estimates one to be at least 15 feet long.

'Teachers are frustrated. We expect to get a settlement or a significant movement in that direction, if that happens, then Wednesday will take care of itself.'
