Self-help in a changing world
published: Tuesday | October 14, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Now is the time for us to use our natural resources and our love for each other to unite and support one another.

We, unlike most of the super countries, are blessed with one season all year round so we can plant our own fresh fruits and vegetables.

One does not need a big lot of land to plant some basic produce such as tomatoes and onions, etc.

I travelled through the United States recently and was amazed to see people going back to basics in order to help feed their families, growing vegetables in old boots and boxes and even in old computer shells.

We do not have to be expert farmers to grow callaloo or sweet peppers. The world is changing; money has less value.

Change children's habits

Our children's future rests in our hands, so we have to show them that good food and good health come from the earth and not from the supermarket and drugstore shelves.

Let us persuade them to leave video games and use their imagination as we did.

Jamaicans are some of the richest people in the world, not by monetary value, but by nature.

All we have to do is start using this wealth the way we should to promote good health - and not depend on food from overseas.

Let us get back to the days when we did time sharing with each other in love.

I am, etc.,
