Costa Rica and US advance to final round
published: Monday | October 13, 2008

MEXICO CITY (AP):

Costa Rica and the United States remained unbeaten in group play Saturday to progress to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, while Mexico will wait at least another match to advance.

Costa Rica downed Suriname 4-1 in Panamaribo, while the Americans breezed past Cuba 6-1. Both will have to wait at least a few more days to know who they meet in the final round, where the top three teams qualify for the 2010 World Cup and the number four nation goes to a play-off against the fifth-place team in South America.

Draw needed

Mexico, needing a draw to advance to the final round, lost 1-0 to Jamaica and will try to progress next Wednesday when they play Canada, who were later eliminated from contention with a 3-1 loss to Honduras.

Walter Centeno, Celso Borges, Armando Alonso and Alonso Solis scored for Costa Rica, which have 12 points to lead Group Three, five ahead of El Salvador, which played out a scoreless draw with Haiti. Haiti have two points, while Suriname stay at one and will need a miracle to advance.

Points standing

In Washington, DaMarcus Beasley scored twice, Landon Donovan added his record 37th goal for the United States and the Americans reached 12 points to lead Group One. The US are followed by Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago, each with five points, after a 0-0 draw on Saturday. Cuba are last with just one point.

Honduras took the Group two lead over Mexico after its 3-1 win over Canada. Both teams have nine points, but the Hondurans have scored one more goal. Jamaica are third in the Group with four points, while Canada stayed at one.
