Keyes to the rescue
published: Monday | October 13, 2008

Rasbert Turner, Spanish Town

Goals by Denzil Watson and Peter Keyes earned Boys' Town a come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Rivoli United, in their fifth-round Digicel Premier League match at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

The contest, played before a capacity crowd, saw Rivoli taking the lead in the 16th minute after Devon Hodges buried a Luke Soares through pass, setting off a frenzy in the stands.

This lead was doubled four minutes later when Derrick Planter latched on to a loose ball, after a free kick had bounced off the Boys' Town wall and placed the ball into the net.

The match was played at a fast pace with both teams trying to make inroads into each other's goal area.

However, stout defending prevented any change to the score until Watson scored a free kick for Boys' Town to cut the deficit in half, right on the stroke of the interval.

Hurried clearances

On the resumption, Boys' Town, through the likes of Asrick Samuels, Zeicko Herrera and Watson, had the Rivoli defence, led by captain Omar Parker, making several hurried clearances.

In the 82nd minute, Planter, who was the hero in the 20th, became the villain when he miskicked a ball into the path of Andre Wheeler, who crossed to Keyes who headed in the equaliser.

Anthony Thompson, the coach of Rivoli, who have not won since the start of the season, said his team should have won and called the draw a loss.

Midfield blunder

"A midfield blunder and a blunder by the goalkeeper to put up a four-man wall close to the goal has resulted in us losing the match."

Andrew Price, Boys' Town's technical director, thanked his players.

"After the half started, I told the players to adjust their game to the uneven surface and we realised that Rivoli were vulnerable. We wanted three points and even hit the crossbar. However, a point away from home is always good."

Rivoli, with its first draw, now have four points, while Boys' Town, with a game in hand, climbed to six.
