Problems with the Spanish 'invasion'
published: Monday | October 13, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

This is in regard to the 'Spanish invasion' on the tourism industry in Jamaica.

The proliferation of Hispanic hotels in Jamaica is said to bring thousands of jobs for Jamaicans. However, there are several underlying problems that create barriers for competent Jamaican citizens. The Spanish hoteliers bring in their own people and they treat Jamaicans unfairly.

Reap the benefits

I am not aware of the conditions that the Government set to regularise the operations of these outside investors. But, whatever the conditions are, I submit that they be revised so that the Jamaican people can reap the benefits that they were so promised.

While it is necessary for Spanish hoteliers to bring in their own people to do training and ensure that company standards are implemented and maintained, it is not for them to permanently occupy every available position of top and middle-level management when there are qualified Jamaicans who can fill those positions.

I have seen instances where Spanish or Hispanic people occupy a position of authority while the Jamaican, who is qualified for the same position, is either refused the job or employed as a subordinate. In most cases, these Spanish workers cannot speak or speak very little English. I have received complaints from guests, that they wanted assistance but the person whom they went to did not understand English.

Who is responsible?

Is the Government aware that this is taking place? Who is responsible for ensuring that the interest of the Jamaican people is served?

I am appealing to the relevant authorities, to investigate the operations of these Spanish hotels to see if the Spanish immigrants who are working are legitimate and if the positions that they occupy can be filled by qualified Jamaicans.

I am, etc.,
