JPS contract should be reviewed
published: Sunday | October 12, 2008

The EDITOR, Sir:

Recently, Mr Max Lambie sent an email to Wilmot Perkin's programme on Power 106 FM. The essence of the email was that the current JPS contract should be reviewed by an independent team of lawyers. He must have visualised that there is a clause in the contract which may not be slanted in the best interest of the consumers.

The late Mrs Vie Mendes was adamant as founder of the National Consumer League regarding the rights of the consumer. An entity like the JPS, our electricity provider, ought to be wholly owned by the Jamaican Government and operate with ISO specifications.

This contract ought to be made available for public scrutiny. Also the Government must encourage a choice of energy providers, for example, granting tax concessions for equipment and installation of solar power with the provision of capital for easy-payment loans.

I am, etc.,
