Up-and-coming Justine Jackson relishes challenging the boys. - Contributed
Competing in a male-dominated sport, teenager Justine Jackson has demonstrated that she is the queen of the go-kart track. She is fearless and as aggressive as her male rivals.
Jackson has no fear about being in the fast lane with the big boys.
"I feel normal, I am not fearful," she told Automotives on Friday. "Once I have on my helmet, I am OK."
Jackson, who has been racing for five years, has no plans to solely compete in Jamaica, however.
"My dream is to race in Formula One and right now I am training for it," she said, oozing ambition.
An upper sixth-form student at Ardenne High School, Justine and her twin brother, Sean, compete in the same class, while her older brother, Joel, races in the ICC Shifter Class.
At the penultimate meet held last Sunday, Justine not only qualified on pole in the Rotax International Class, but displayed courage and determination.
In one of her better performances of the day, they got off to a flying start, but approaching the first corner, a competitor hit her from behind, sending her kart spinning. She was left at the back of the pack.
But undaunted, the teenager drove her heart out to get back into contention. She closed in on André Anderson before overtaking him to finish third. The race was won by Dane Lawson, who produced a late burst in the final 50 metres to beat Sean Jackson.
"She is very talented," stated Neil Williams, president of the Jamaica Karting Association.
Highlights
The highlights of the day were shared by Colin Daley Jr, who was unbeatable in the Rotax Mini-Max Class. Mario Mair also made a clean sweep in the Rotax Masters Class.
Seven-year-old Mark Anthony Eaton, who competes in the 50cc and 80cc Baby Class events, won three of his six races.
Justin Sirgany, Philip Myers and Justin Wong were among the day's other victors.
With only one race meet remaining this year, most of the class champions have already been decided. The season climaxes on November 17.
