THE POLICE could not restrain students of Wolmer's Boys' and Girls' schools from mobbing Olympic gold medallists Shelly-Ann Fraser and Michael Frater when they visited the Corporate Area institutions yesterday.

The athletes, who are past students of the Heroes Circle-based schools, were taking part in an Olympic homecoming school tour.

The decorative items at the school set the celebratory tone with a colourful mural of Fraser catching visitors' attention on entering Wolmer's Girls.

Fever pitch

The throng of students hoisted placards with pictures of the athletes while shouting, "We love you!"

The celebration reached fever pitch seconds after the national anthem ended, signalling the beginning of the ceremony.

In between drama pieces, dance items and a steel-band performance, the students screamed the names of the Olympians.

Words of inspiration

The two-hour ceremony reached its pinnacle when recording artiste Wayne Marshall, also a past student, went onstage. He performed This Moment, an ode to Jamaica's participation at the Olympics.

In-between signing autographs - on caps, shirts, flags, books, umbrellas and paper - the athletes took the microphone and offered words of inspiration.

"It is amazing! I thank everyone for the support," said Fraser with a wide, infectious smile. She credited Wolmer's Girls for her accomplishment, saying the discipline she received at the school assisted in honing her talent.

Frater used the opportunity to denounce current acts of violence against children.
