LONDON (AP):
Liverpool rallied from two goals down to beat Manchester City 3-2 yesterday and stay neck-and-neck with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League and promoted Hull climbed into third place after a 1-0 victory at last-place Tottenham.
League leader Chelsea outplayed Aston Villa 2-0 at Stamford Bridge with goals by Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka, but Liverpool's comeback at City of Manchester Stadium put it even at the top with 17 points. Fernando Torres scored two goals and Dirk Kuyt added the winner in injury time.
"In the first half we made some mistakes with both goals," Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez said. "In the second half we changed to more attacking, more pressing. We had our chances and we scored three goals and could have scored more."
Playing first division football for the first time in its 104-year history, Hull followed up its shock 2-1 win at Arsenal last week by beating Tottenham. Geovanni scored with a powerful free kick in the ninth-minute, a week after his long-range goal against the Gunners.
"He seems to be enjoying the experiences of the Premier League and long may that continue," Hull manager Phil Brown said. "He's a special player as he's proving."
POSITIVE ATTITUDE
The loss leaves Tottenham last with only two points from seven games and puts even more pressure on manager Juande Ramos.
"The attitude of the players is very positive," said the coach who guided Sevilla to two UEFA Cup titles before he moved to White Hart Lane.
"In training and working and speaking with the players, my feeling is that they want to finish this situation quickly. But when you don't score goals it is not easy to win."
Portsmouth beat next-to-last Stoke 2-1, Bolton won 3-1 at West Ham and Newcastle came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Everton.
After Stephen Ireland put Man City ahead in the 19th minute, Javier Garrido made it 2-0 in the 41st with a free kick.
Torres turned home Alvaro Arbeloa's cross in the 55th minute and, after City defender Pablo Zabaleta had been sent off in the 67th for a two-footed foul, the Spain striker made it 2-2 with a glancing header in the 73rd from Steven Gerrard's inswinging corner.
A serious knee injury to Martin Skrtel led to six minutes of injury time and Kuyt scored his first league goal in 26 matches for the Reds.
CONSIDER CHANGES
Villa manager Martin O'Neill has not changed his starting line-up in any of the team's seven league games but may consider changes after the loss at Chelsea.
Cole gave the Blues a 21st-minute lead from Frank Lampard's cross and Anelka scored with a tap-in a minute before half-time after Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel saved a shot from Michael Ballack.
"For me, it is the most important game this season because if we win we are in first position," Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said. "We now have a minimum 10 days to recuperate our players - the players who are injured and did not play. This is (the) most important thing for us."
FULLER EQUALISER
Peter Crouch put Portsmouth ahead in the 25th minute with an overhead shot and after Ricardo Fuller levelled in the 48th, Jermaine Defoe scored the winner in the 51st with his fifth Premier League goal of the season.
Mikel Arteta gave Everton the lead with a 17th-minute penalty after Nicky Butt brought down Leighton Baines and the Toffees went further ahead in the 35th when Marouane Fellaini volleyed home Baines' left-wing cross.
Stephen Taylor headed home a right-wing cross by Geremi just before half-time and Damien Duff turned home Taylor's cross to make it 2-2 in the 47th.
Newcastle had lost five of its previous seven league and cup games and short-term coach Joe Kinnear captured a point from his first game in charge.
"We've worked two, three sessions a day, morning and afternoon since I arrived at the club and I think it's starting to show," said Kinnear, who took over last Monday.
"I was very much concerned that maybe we didn't have enough experience in the side on the pitch."
Kevin Davies gave Bolton a 30th-minute lead after Hammers goalkeeper Robert Green dropped a cross at his feet. Gary Cahill added the second four minutes later.
Carlton Cole replied for West Ham with a close-range header in the 69th, but Taylor's 35-metre (yard) free kick flew past Green for the third in the 86th.
