New Kingston traffic hazard
published: Monday | October 6, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

There is a fatal accident waiting to happen on Knutsford Boulevard in New Kingston. Traffic lights were activated on this busy boulevard, recently, in an effort to streamline the traffic flow. There is, however, an anomaly which must be corrected.

There are traffic-light controlled pedestrian crossings at Barbados Avenue and Grenada Crescent, as well as an unregulated pedestrian crossing between these two lights. This crossing presents a dangerous traffic hazard.

What happens is that going north, although drivers get the green light at both Barbados Avenue and Grenada Crescent, pedestrians also have the right to try to cross the road at the same time, using the unregulated crossing that sits between these two lights. I have repeatedly seen drivers concentrating on the green light ahead having to brake suddenly as pedestrians cross the road using the middle crossing. This affects the traffic flow and poses a danger to life and limb.

Assess the risks

For safety's sake, and to facilitate a smooth flow, the traffic engineers responsible for this road should assess the risks involved and do something about this problem immediately. That crossing should either be synchronised with the lights at Barbados Avenue and Grenada Crescent, or removed. I also do not see the need for three pedestrian crossings on this short strip of road.

Please, let us not wait for an accident to happen before something is done.

I am, etc.,

LEROY A. BROWN
