The Editor, Sir:The recent increase in child sodomy and/or killings is a major cause for concern. And even though there is evidence that some of these crimes are committed by our own citizens, it occurred to me, while watching an Oprah Winfrey show on missing kids, that it is possible that some of these convicted and registered paedophiles may very well be visiting our shores.
Absurd? I think not, when one considers how easy it is to enter our shores; most nationals need only a simple driver's licence and birth certificate; in some cases - a national ID!
Not far-fetched
The implementation of visa requirements is not far-fetched to combat crime in this regard.
Consider, for the moment, that we could prevent the entry of known criminals from other countries long before they even get to their country's port of departure! As for convicted and registered paedophiles - that would be automatic condition for denied entry. As is the case with embassies and consulates in our country, a police record plays an important role in whether or not we are granted a visa to visit their country.
It is about time we learn the best examples from first-world countries in this regard. Their visa requirements go a far way in combating crime and monitoring the movement of convicted criminals of various crimes.
Let's not wait until the scratch becomes a sore.
I am, etc.,
