Hair-ing the truth on grooming
published: Saturday | October 4, 2008

Keisha Brown, Saturday Life Writer

It's often underestimated just how much effort men put into their appearance. In fact, men who take extra good care of themselves are often ridiculed and jeered, sometimes termed favourably, or unfavourably, metrosexual.

Male grooming is very important in achieving that finished look that complements a compact wardrobe. For our male Saturday Life readers who understand the importance of slickness, here are a few tips to help you keep up appearances.

Necessary tools for today's man

For short hair, a boar-bristle brush is ideal because it's natural. Use it every day to help stimulate your scalp. Most black men have hair that grows toward the face and down. Brush hair in the direction of growth.

For longer hair, invest in a hard rubber, wide-tooth comb to help detangle hair after shampooing. Never use extensive amounts of force when combing dry and tangled hair. Use a light hair-dress or a comb-out spray to help prevent breakage and excessive hair loss when combing to style.

Is wearing a cap good for the hair and scalp?

Caps are good if you are out in the hot, glaring sun. However, it is not recommended for long periods of time because the scalp needs to breathe. Wearing a cap for long may create problems such as dry, flaky scalp - especially if the hair isn't being shampooed regularly.

How can we prevent dry hair and scalp problems?

Black men, on average, do not consume enough water. Water is vital in maintaining sufficient moisture in the hair and scalp. Men should use a good moisturising shampoo every two to three days, followed by an application of a rinse conditioner, which should be left in the hair for approximately two minutes. Once a month use a deep-penetrating conditioner, which should be left in for approximately five to 10 minutes.

Does the sun affect our hair, especially if we spend a lot of time outdoors?

The sun can discolour and dull natural hair sheen. It will also rob the hair and scalp of the moisture and natural oils necessary for soft, healthy-looking hair. Perspiration from exercise and outdoor activities can cause a dry, itchy scalp. To avoid this problem, remember to shampoo regularly with a moisturising shampoo.

Now I can hear a lot of you saying, "I don't have time for all of this conditioning!" Well, look at it this way: If you can spend six hours a week at the gym, you can spend 30 minutes a month on your hair! Any part of your body that's given special attention is going to respond. Your hair will as well.
