Mental disorder is the problem
published: Friday | October 3, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

On Wednesday, October 1, your newspaper reported the death of a nine-month-old baby who was molested and killed. The types of crimes being committed have led me to agree with a commentator on one of our radio talk shows, who made the observation that it appears that Jamaica now has a violence problem rather than a crime problem.

Mental health

It is evident that there is a problem with good mental health in Jamaica today. We can no longer treat the perpetrators of these acts of violence as simple bad men and hunt them down. We need to put the systems in place to diagnose and treat the thousands of Jamaicans who now appear have developed some type of mental disorder.

We have to get the diagnosis right before we can solve a problem; otherwise, we will only treat the symptom while the 'cancer' spreads.

I am, etc.,
